Bronze Age Gold from Wales

The artist's model

BARGUE, Charles (1826-1883)

Although painted in 1874, the interior details and the figures' dress date from around a hundred years earlier. Bargue's eighteenth-century styled subjects were popular among those with traditional and academic tastes. Such paintings are in contrast to the modern scenes exhibited by the Impressionists in that same year. Here the artist's brushwork only appears "impressionistic" because it is a study and not a finished painting.

Work was part of the AFA tour (2009-2010): From Turner to Cézanne: Masterpieces from the Davies Collection, National Museum Wales
