Bronze Age Gold from Wales
Sandbanks on the Mawddach, Barmouth
This dramatic depiction of the Mawddach Estuary, looks eastwards and inland from a vantage point known as the Panorama Walk. Swirling rainclouds hide the formidable mountain of Cader Idris which rises steeply from the distant shore. Instead, the artist focuses on the light effects created by the waters of the estuary and the ever-shifting mudflats. The detailed observation of the landscape appears almost photographic in places. John Ingle Lee was a close follower of the Pre-Raphaelites who endeavoured to convey truth and power in nature.
