The Capture of Cartouche
PRYDE, James (1866-1941)
Louis-Dominique Cartouche was a celebrated French burglar and footpad who was betrayed by an associate and executed in 1721. In 1905-1908 Pryde also produced a lithograph of the same character as part of his portfolio of six 'Portraits of Celebrated Criminals.' This scene bears little resemblance to the account of Cartouche's fall in Charles Whibley's 'A Book of Scoundrels' published in 1910.
