Bronze Age Gold from Wales

A third class carriage

DAUMIER, Honoré (1808-1879)

This hurried oil sketch contains little fine detail yet is highly expressive. Daumier conveys the crowded discomfort and hints at the passengers' character through their dress and posture. Daumier's works often dealt with issues of social class and the third-class carriage was a favourite theme of Daumier's in the early 1860s. Other more finished versions of this subject also exist.

Work was part of the AFA tour (2009-2010): From Turner to Cézanne: Masterpieces from the Davies Collection, National Museum Wales
