Bronze Age Gold from Wales

William Fellowes (1706-1755)

The sitter (1706-1775) was a lawyer who purchased Shotesham Park in Norfolk in 1737 and devoted his life to improving the estate and to acts of philanthropy, including the founding of the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital. This is a reversed version of a portrait dated 1744, and was commissioned by the sitter as a gift to his friend Robert Marsham. Joseph Highmore was one of the leading portraitists of the reign of George II, and one of the first to emphasise the private character and good nature of his sitters.
