Rapids on the Dulais, Neath Valley, photograph

Mounted salted paper print (from Calotype paper negative). Rapids on the River Dulais with large rock in foreground and wooden footbridge in the backgroud.

This view shows the rapids over the River Dulais in the Vale of Neath. The combination of water, woodland and a bridge is reminiscent of many of the landscape photographs taken on his estate at Penllergare. On the death of his grandfather JDL had inherited both Penllergare and an estate at Ynysygerwn. This photograph is likely to have been taken on or near that Ynysygerwn estate. Numerous similarly composed version of this view exist as JDL photographed the scene many times. Various titles include “Rapids on the Dulais”, “River Dulais near Ynysygerwn in the Vale of Neath”, "Fall of the Dulais" and "The Little Wooden Bridge across the Dulais." Mounted, it is signed by the photographer. (Source: 'Pastures Green and Dark Satanic Mills: The British Passion for Landscape', 2015)
