Bronze Age Gold from Wales

Thomas (d.1480) and Elizabeth (d.1533) Stradlinge

One of three panels painted for the Lady Chapel at St Donat's and representing generations of the Stradlinge family which held lands in South Wales and Somerset.

The inscription at the bottom identifies this couple as Sir Thomas Stradlinge (d. 1480) and his wife Elizabeth (d. 1533).

The inscription behind his head states that he DIED BEFORE HE WAS 26 YEARES OF AGE and the latin text gives her age at the time: ANO AETA SUE 24. Their three children who predeceased them are shown kneeling behind. The motto above Thomas Stradlinge DUW A DIGON ('God is enough') was frequently used by Welsh families. The arms on the left are those of Stradlinge and those on the right are those of his wife's family, the Matthews of Radyr.
