Bronze Age Gold from Wales

Late Bronze Age bronze socketed spearhead

Plain pegged spearhead fragment. Fragment of a circular socket with an external mouth diameter of approximately 25-30mm and tapering to 18.5mm external diameter at the upper break. The absence of a casting seam indicates it formed part of a socket face rather than side. At one point 35.5mm above the mouth, there is a curved surface section 3.3mm in length, which is soil covered, in contrast with the fresh breaks around it. Microscope examination reveals an even curve with a very slight prominence of metal around the inner socket surface, leading to its identification as part of the circumference of a peg hole. This being so, it would seem that the mouth of the socket was possibly slightly oval in shape. There are vertical striations along the surface of the socket, possibly use wear or slight damage during retrieval.
