Bronze Age Gold from Wales

Workmen on the street

DAUMIER, Honoré (1808-1879)

The focus of Daumier's painting is a workman in shadow, smoking a pipe with a pick over his shoulder. Almost as if looking down his nose, his gaze points toward a wealthy-looking gentleman in a top hat. Daumier was a relentless Realist and social commentator. This painting reflects the unease which existed then between the wealthier 'bourgeoisie' and labouring classes.
