Bronze Age Gold from Wales

Starving twenty-four year old mother with child, Biafra

Don McCullin took this photograph while on assignment for the Sunday Times Magazine. He was sent to document the Biafran war, in which a million people died over a three-year period. The war resulted in widespread famine and disease, highlighted in this harrowing portrait of a mother, only 24 years of age, attempting to breastfeed her infant child. She appears dignified, gazing directly into the lens of the camera. Her raw expression forces the viewer to comprehend the atrocities of war and its devastating impact on civilians.
