Bronze Age Gold from Wales

Cilgerran Castle

First recorded in 1204, the castle overlooking the river Teifi, near Cardigan, was rebuilt by William Marshall II following its capture from the Welsh in 1223. Havell visited Wales at least twice, in 1802 and 1803. This romantic painting of the castle at sunset, perhaps that exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1805, is closely related to a watercolour probably shown at the Society of Painters in Watercolour in 1806.
