Phoenix patent fuel block

Flat-shaped 28lb (nominal weight) patent fuel block inscribed ‘Phoenix’ with pictorial image of a phoenix. Manufactured by the Phoenix Patent Fuel Co at Swansea, shipped on the S.S. GIRDLENESS along with coal. The vessel was torpedoed by a German submarine 2 May 1918 off North Cornwall and sank.
