Bronze Age Gold from Wales

Crossing the sands to Swansea market

In this work, farmers are taking cattle and agricultural produce from Oystermouth across the sands at low tide to Swansea, seen in the distance. Edward Pritchard specialized in painting seaside scenes, though here the sky and brightly dressed figures dominate the composition. Pritchard was born in Bristol and worked there, in London and in Southampton. He specialised in seaside scenes of Britain and Belgium. The view was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1856. It depicts farmers taking cattle and agricultural produce from Oystermouth at low tide across the sands of Swansea Bay.
