Bronze Age Gold from Wales
Andrea Calvi (b.1590)
ALBANI, Francesco (1578-1660)
The inscription on this painting tells us that the subject, Andrea Calvi, was forty-two when he sat for his portrait. He wears a fashionable lace collar and cuff, and holds a letter addressed to himself. Nothing is known about him except that he was the father of Andrea Calvi (1627-79) a distinguished lawyer and priest. Portraits by the Bologna-based artist Albani are extremely rare. He is more renowned for his paintings of mythological subjects, landscapes and for his frescos. Albani studied under Carracci in Rome before returning to his native city.
