Launched 1943 as LORRIN A. THURSTON, but completed by California Shipbuilding Corp., Los Angeles (engine by Joshua Hendy Ionworks, Sunnyvale, California) as SAMCALIA, managed for MoWT by Furness Withy & Co., London. 1947 – Sold to Furness Withy & Co., and renamed PACIFIC LIBERTY. 1954 – Sold to Febo Ameo Bertorella Soc., Genoa, and renamed PHOEBUS under the Italian flag. 1962 – Sold to Seatide Shipping Co., Lugano, and renamed BAYHORSE, under the Liberian flag. 1966 – Registration transferred to Panama (same owners). 1970 – Sold to Cia de Nav Houston, Lugano, and renamed SAN GABRIEL (Panama). She was broken up at Split, Yugoslavia, in 1971. (mariners-l/libertyships)
