Miners strike badge

Circular metal pin badge with sticker attached to front - 'Support the Miners NUM Stop Pit Closures'. Worn by donor during 1984/85 miners strike. Donor was born in 1950, and trained at Caeduke training centre. Worked at Abernant Colliery on the coal faces from the age of 18 until it closed in 1988. Active on picket lines during the 1984/85 strike and was arrested in Port Talbot while attempting to stop lorries going into the steel works. After Abernant closed he worked as a contractor in various mines for the Thyssen company.

The 1984-85 Miners' Strike generated a great interest in the production and wearing of lapel badges. Many pickets covered their caps and jackets with them.
