Bronze Age Gold from Wales

Flower Piece

CHOWNE, Gerard (1875-1917)

Chowne studied at the Slade School of Art, exhibited with the New English Art Club from 1905, and taught painting in Liverpool University in 1905-08. These garden flowers in a Chinese vase include love-in-the-mist, carnations and delphiniums. In 1915 the art critic Sir Frederick Wedmore described this painting as 'a very accomplished, but a very original piece of work - a difficult scheme of colour, carried out very ably.'
