Bronze Age Gold from Wales
Village street
VLAMINCK, Maurice de (1876 - 1958)
Vlaminck had been a leading Fauve, together with Matisse, Derain, Friesz and Marquet, but he soon abandoned the brightly coloured Fauvist palette. Sharp recession and large blocks of paint imbue this street scene of 1911-12 with a dynamism reminiscent of Cubist compositions. This and another Vlaminck were purchased by Gwendoline Davies on the recommendation of Hugh Blaker in 1919.
Work was part of the AFA tour (2009-2010): From Turner to Cézanne: Masterpieces from the Davies Collection, National Museum Wales
