Myth of Sexual Loss # 2

Colour photograph of a naked elderly man framing only the top of his head as he lies on a bed. One of a series of six photographs exploring the myth of sexual loss in elderly people. Brett invited volunteers between the ages of 60 and 90.

The Myth of Sexual Loss addresses the stigma that exists around sexuality and the ageing body. The idea for the project was influenced by Brett’s experience as a nurse caring for the elderly. Through talking with her patients, it became clear that the desire for passion and intimacy does not stop as you enter the later stages of life. The composition of the photograph is integral to the understanding of the work; the tight frame creating a disorientating intensity that directly challenges the myth.
