Bronze Age Gold from Wales

Powell's Pit, photograph

Powell's Pit. Two colliers stand in front of the first tram to be raised at Powell's Pit after it's re-opening. The tram is raced extremely high with lumps in the Welsh fashion. This was owing to the shortage of trams each man had to make the best use of the trams he got to fill his tonnage. His pay depended on the amount of large coal wrought. The "R.L." marks are probably the initials of one of the colliers and the tram also carried his sequence number filled each week.
