Bronze Age Gold from Wales

Ruins of Llanthony Abbey

HODGES, William (1744-1797)

The picturesque ruins of Llanthony Priory in the Black Mountains are shown here from a dramatically low viewpoint, exaggerating the size of the buildings. The sense of monumentality is increased by the diminutive size of the figures and the contrast of the architecture against the light sky. Hodges studied painting under Richard Wilson and was the official artist on Captain Cook's second voyage to the South Pacific in 1772-5.
