Dinorwic Slate Train (painting)
Busby, George (From Guild of Railway Artists website - George Busby was born in Birmingham in 1926 and still lives and works in the West Midlands. For many years he was engaged as a graphic designer and illustrator. In 1978 he left the advertising world to take up painting full time.
He works mainly in watercolour and gouache covering a wide variety of subject matter, however, the industrial scene remains his favourite with railways in particular.
He has been commissioned to illustrate corporate calendars by major institutions and businesses and was represented in a series entitled "British Watercolours" - a collection of greetings cards and calendars featuring some of his finest work.
He exhibits regularly in London galleries, the Midlands, Cumbria and North Wales. His work is included in the National Library of Wales and in numerous private collections.
As well as being a member of the Guild of Railway Artists, George is also a member of the Chartered Society of Designers, the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
It is with much sadness that we report George Busby died on November 9th 2005.
ALSO -
George Busby was born in Birmingham in 1926 and resided in the West Midlands. For a number of years he was engaged in the display industry as a graphic designer and illustrator. In 1978 he finally decided to leave the advertising world to take up painting as a full time artist.
Working mainly in watercolour and gouache, he covered a variety of subjects but in particular, the industrial scene. The dramatic landscapes of North Wales with its slate quarrying towns, served in the past by narrow gauge railways made a deep impression on him. The West Midland industrialscape and urbanscape also provide a wealth of subject matter.
The railway in all its facets had been a love of George's since he found those in North Wales. He joined the Guild in 1986 and was elected to Full Membership in 1987. He is also a Member of the Chartered Society of Designers, A Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a Member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists.
George Busby has exhibited extensively throughout the England and Wales. His work has been shown at The Mall Galleries in London, The Royal Birmingham Society of Artists Gallery and one man exhibitions at The Ombersley Gallery, near Worcester, Look Gallery, Hemsley, Yorkshire, Tegfryn Gallery, Anglesey and an Annual One Man exhibition in Solihull. His work was also commissioned and now hangs in many private collections as well as corporate collections. Some of those commissions have been to illustrate calendars for companies such as Amoco Oil, Courage Breweries and a number of Building Societies.)
