WELLINGTON and HOPE, photograph

Brig WELLINGTON and three-masted barque HOPE at Aberystwyth.

The brig WELLINGTON was built in Prince Edward Island, Canada, in 1856 for Nelson & Co of Liverpool. In 1858-59 she was sold to J. Davies & Co of Newport. In 1862-63 she was sold to Thomas & Co of Aberystwyth. In 1873-74 she was sold to Roberts & Co of Aberystwyth.

The Aberystwyth three-masted barque HOPE was built in 1865 by ‘Labbié’ (probably Louis Labbé or Pierre-Gabriel Labbé) in Quebec, Canada, for Wallace & Co of Newport. She was sold to T. Jones of Aberystwyth in 1871/72, then to E.J. Jones of Aberystwyth, then to John Evans of Aberystwyth, in whose ownership she capsized and sank 30 miles south of Cape Race, Newfoundland, Canada, on 22 August 1892 on a voyage from Port Dalhousie, New Brunswick, Canada, to Porthmadog, with a cargo of timber.
