Bronze Age Gold from Wales

Girl carrying a pail

Born near Pontypool, Barker and his family moved to Bath around 1782. Although little regarded in London, he was hailed in Bath as a prodigy and a successor to Gainsborough. His early rise was partly attributed to a local patron, Charles Spackman, who sent him to Italy in 1790 - 93. This sensitive oil sketch of a girl struggling with a heavy pail was probably painted there.
