Bronze Age Gold from Wales

Maples at Cuckfield, Sussex

Bevan studied at Westminster School of Art and in Paris. In 1911 he was a founder member of the Camden Town Group. This painting depicts the view from the Town Field at Horsgate, the home of the artist's father, near Cuckfield in East Sussex. Although the tonality of this landscape remains light, the emphasis on angular pattern and structure is analogous with contemporary Expressionist painting. Margaret Davies purchased this work in 1954.

Work was part of the AFA tour (2009-2010): From Turner to Cézanne: Masterpieces from the Davies Collection, National Museum Wales
