Launched December 1943 as WILLIAM R. COX, but completed 1944 by Bethlehem-Fairfield Shipyards Inc., Baltimore, Maryland (engine by General Machinery Corp., Hamilton, Ohio), as SAMTWEED for MoWT, managed by Hall Lines Ltd., Liverpool. 1947 – Sold to Ellerman Lines Ltd., and renamed CITY OF NEWPORT, managed by Hall Lines Ltd. 1961 – Sold to Veritas Shipping Corp., (Greek flag) and renamed ISTROS II, managed by N & J Vlassopulos, London. She was broken up at Trieste, Italy, in 1967. (mariners-l // libertyships)
