Bronze Age Gold from Wales

Study of a woodman

A sketch of a subject frequently treated by Barker. Its unfinished state reveals the artist's use of a warm brown ground to provide a middle tone on which contours were speedily sketched – as in the figure at the left. In 1813 an ink sketch of the principal figure was published in a lithographic portfolio of Barker's drawings titled 'Impressions of Rustic Figures after Nature'.
