Bronze Age Gold from Wales

A sailing boat off Deal

Deal overlooks the great natural harbour of the Downs between the Kentish coast and the Goodwin Sands. It was an important pilot station with boatmen famous for their skill and daring. This is one of a group of sketches of sailing boats in rough weather painted in around 1835. It apparently belonged to Turner's housekeeper, Mrs Booth.
