Bronze Age Gold from Wales
Two baboons
NICHOLLS, Thomas (Maker of animals for Cardiff Castle wall, c 1887)
Mature baboon crouching on one side of the sloping roof, it's head inclined to the left looking down upon a younger smaller baboon crouching on the opposite slope. It's head is turned towards the adult babbon and it;s right paw holds the adult's arm.
These plaster models (maquettes) were made by Thomas Nicholls from William Burges’ original drawings for Cardiff Castle’s ‘Animal Wall’. The Marquis of Bute commissioned Burges to restore Cardiff Castle in 1869, and the ‘Animal Wall’ is perfectly in keeping with his spectacular and playful Gothic-style interior.
