Bronze Age Gold from Wales

Mother and child

MUNRO, Alexander (1825-1871)

Oval relief panel depicting a Madonna and Child, inscribed with artist's monogram to lower edge, AM.

The sentimental subject of this bronze plaque typifies mid-nineteenth-century tastes. Stylistically, the way in which the mother and child are depicted may also be linked to the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. The artist was not an official member of the group but was a friend of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, one of its founders.
