Bronze Age Gold from Wales
Tar wagon
National Coal Board cylindrical tar tank wagon No.7,328. Built May 1940 by Cambrian Wagon Works Ltd., Cardiff. It was colliery company and later N.C.B. owned, and registered to run on the G.W.R. (No. 7167A), later B.R., hence the two wagon numbers. Latterly it passed into Thomas Ness Ltd. ownership, but this phase is not reflected in any plates or paint inscriptions. Obtained 1988 from Thomas Ness Ltd., Caerphilly Tar Works. Restored by Museum in late 1980s.
Wagon carries two plates reading “Genly. Repaired / NCB / GWR 7167 / 5.1971”. These are in addition to its N.C.B. ownership plates and its one (or an original two) surviving Cambrian Wagon Works Cardiff builder’s plate and its (now detached – see 88.37I (1)) G.W.R. plate.
