Bronze Age Gold from Wales

The secret

DAUMIER, Honoré (1808-1879)

A wizened old lady leans in toward an eager young woman, eyes closed and gesturing with a feeble hand as if about to speak. Their profiles are highlighted against a dark background, emphasising the contrast between the wrinkles of old age and the fresh glow of youth. Daumier's skill as a caricaturist shows in the simplicity of this scene personifying experience and innocence.
