Bronze Age Gold from Wales

Rumney Pottery, photograph

Photograph captioned 'Rumney Pottery, Cardiff. The pug mill is the machine in which the clay is ground and worked in readiness for shaping by the potter. The mill revolves and is operated by a pair of bevel gear wheels, one large and horizontal, the other small and vertical. The horizontal gear wheel is driven by the upright shaft fixed to its centre and it transmits its revolutions through its teeth into the teeth of the smaller gear wheel which then drives the mill. This driving mechanism dates from about 1890.' Mounted on card. Made for the exhibition RECORDING WALES 3 in 1970/1971.
