Bronze Age Gold from Wales

A summer court

MONTICELLI, Adolphe (1824 - 1886)

Born in Marseilles, Monticelli spent the years 1847-49 and 1856-70 in Paris. There he was deeply influenced by the colour of Delacroix and the Rococo revival compositions of Diaz de la Pena. This characteristic 'illusion d'optique' dates from the second half of the 1860s. Such scenes became very popular with British and American collectors. Monticelli's rich colour and expressionist brushwork was highly influential on Van Gogh. Gwendoline Davies purchased this work in 1913.
