Roll of honour

Paper, framed and glazed Second World War roll of honour. Printed black and white roll of honour headed “1939-1945 Roll of honour.” Centre top hand coloured house flag of James Nourse Ltd. / Nourse Line. Seven columns each headed with names of ships lost (SS Jumna, SS Jhelum, SS Saugor, MV Bhima, SS Ganges, MV Indus, MV Sutlej), date and circumstances of loss. European employees lost with each vessel listed by rank, with surnames, initials and ranks stated for each – total 38 names. For some vessels, the numbers of gunners lost (total 20) is also stated but without names. For one vessel it is stated “No European casualties” and for another “No casualties”. At the foot of each column is stated “Total loss of life” (respectively 109, 8, 59, nil, 15, 22, 49) with the statement “Includes xxx Indians” (respectively 91, 8, 41, nil, 11, 18, 35). At bottom are listed “Honours and awards” made to employees: OBE (three), MBE (four), BEM (one), ‘Commended for bravery” (six), DSM (one), Lloyd’s War Medal (four), with recipients listed under each medal or award by rank, surnames, initials and rank stated for each.
