This was a “Crater” class Liberty ship laid down as JOHN G. NICOLAY, but completed 1943 as ALBIREO (p/n AK90) by Permanente Metals (Shipbuilding Division), Richmond California, for the US Navy. 1946 – Transferred to the US War Shipping Administration, and reverted to her original name, JOHN G. NICOLAY. 1947 – Sold to Southern Steamship Ltd., Johannesburg, and renamed PRESIDENT STEYN. 1949 – Transferred to Northern Steamship Ltd., (same name). 1951 – Sold to Cia. Nav. Hidalgo, Panama, and renamed HIDALGO (Liberian flag), managed by Southern Star Shipping Co., New York. 1954 – Sold to Blue Bay Steamship Corp., and renamed OCEAN SAILOR (Liberian flag), managed by Jason Steamship Co., Montreal. She was broken up at Kure, Japan in 1967. (mariners-l/LibShipsJ)
