Piano, square
Square piano with mahogany case and brass hinges.
Made in London in 1772 by Johannes Zumpe, with whom we associate the first British square pianos. Aside from the four surviving examples from 1766, this instrument is one of the earliest of its type and Zumpe's designs became the blueprint for a new competitive industry of square piano making in the latter part of the 18th century.
