Stumpwork picture

Stumpwork picture, about 1620-40. Divided into two vertical panels within a border. The first panel depicts a figure playing a lute. In the foreground is a pool containing a fish, and in the background there is a representation of a palace, and a tree bearing fruit. Around the central figure are flowers, a caterpillar and beetle. The head and hands of the figure, the lute and fruit, are of wood covered with laid silks. Metallic thread and purl are used for the dress (which is padded with wool), the pool, flowers, caterpillar, outlines of palace and tree. The panel is further ornamented with coloured glass beads, seed pearls, sequins and barbs of peacock feathers. The second panel depicts a woman with a dog on a lead. In the foreground are a hare and a columbine, and in the background a thatched cottage, tree, bird and sun. To one side there is a caterpillar. This panel is embroidered with coloured silks in long and short stitch. Pearls are applied to the woman's dress. The border is worked with coloured silks in long and short, satin, stem and laid stitches, metallic thread, sequins and barbs of peacock feathers being applied. It contains animal, bird and insect designs alternating with honeysuckle, roses, pansies, cornflowers and other flowers, having in the four corners, a leopard, camel, lion and stag.
