Gouge
A heavy, hollow-bladed chisel, used for excavating wheel hubs to take the axle-bearing, known as a box. At one end of the wheelwright's gouge is a shallow curved blade, and at the other is a socketed woodend handle.
Handle probably a relatively recent replacement [RP; 17/04/2009]
