Puzzle jug

Buckley Pottery (Buckley in Flintshire was associated with the making of pottery, most notably slipwares, from the medieval period to 1946, when the last pottery in the area closed. It was at its most productive during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.)

Puzzle jug of imperfectly blended red and white earthenware , standing on a flat base, the body with steeply rising sides, bulbous at the shoulder with cylindrical neck, the neck pierced with a border of rectangles surmounted by alternating inverted and upright triangles, surmounted in turn by a tubular rim with five horizontally protruding cylindrical spouts roughly applied; rounded handle attached to the rim, the upper terminal surmounted by an applied volute scroll; the whole of a marbled red and yellow appearance produced by the red and white bodies being covered with a rich yellow glaze, the clay being more evenly blended toward the rim giving a pale orange appearance; the protruding spouts of a white body, appearing yellow , the volute scroll likewise; the handle of dark red appearance, restored with plaster in one section ; on the shoulder opposite to the handle an embossed area of red with the date 1701 stamped into the raised clay and in-filled with white slip.
