ROSSO, Medardo (1858 - 1928)
Born in Turin, Rosso was trained in Milan. He first visited Paris in 1884 and lived there between 1889-97, when he was deeply influenced by Dalou and Rodin. The subject-matter and atmospheric quality of his sculptures also recall the paintings of Carriére. To achieve tactile and pictorial effects he experimented with the fragile medium of wax over plaster. One of his most successful compositions, this head was cast in an edition of at least 17 waxes and bronzes.
