Cambrian Pottery (Established in Swansea in 1764, the Cambrian Pottery reached its creative peak under the proprietorship of Lewis Weston Dillwyn (1778-1855), who ran the Pottery (with a break between 1817 and 1824) from 1802 to 1836. Lewis Weston Dillwyn was a natural scientist, antiquarian, Member of Parliament, magistrate and landowner whose intellectual interests drove the Cambrian Pottery to become one of the most ambitious and artistically accomplished British potteries of the early 19th century. While the porcelain manufactured in Swansea between 1814 and 1825 justifies its reputation as among the finest of British porcelains, the pottery produced under Dillwyn’s ownership between 1802 and about 1809 was at its best an equally impressive achievement, most particularly that made for sale in the Pottery’s Cambrian Warehouse in London 1806-1808, the context for which this supper service was most likely created.)
Jug, pearlware, standing on a flattened-off foot-rim, bulbous body, cylindrical neck, plain beak spout the top of which has broken off, grooved loop handle; transfer-printed in brown with to one side of the body a small scene in a circular panel showing the head and shoulders of a male figure in naval uniform in front of a number of sailing ships on an expanse of sea, around the scene is printed the inscription "ENGLAND EXPECTS EVERY MAN WILL DO HIS DUTY / ADML L NELSON", to the other side of the body is printed a ship under sail on an expanse of sea with around it the inscription "OFF TRAFALGAR OCTR 21 1805 / VICTORY", both scenes surrounded by flowers and foliage, border to the exterior lip-rim and spout of foliate scrolls and flower heads interspersed with lattice-work and diaper patterns, border to the interior lip-tim and spout of flower heads on a brown ground, an orange-brown edge to the lip-rim, a cell pattern border to the handle. The foot-rim chipped.
