Walking stick
Walking stick with serpent made from a single piece of sycamore.
Everyday objects become works of art in the hands of a wood carver. Craftspeople can see designs in the way wood has grown, and use their carving skills to bring them to life. In the past, carved sticks were given to people as a token of appreciation. Some sticks reflect particular interests or a particular activity. Stickmaking was a hobby craft rather than a means of earning a living.
Wooden stick with crop handle; thicker section at collar level, with large hole at each side; chain of wooden links (some missing?) passes through holes and is attached to a slotted pendant with ball inside; slotted chamber lower on stem containing 2 large balls; relief carving of a snake coiled round lower part of stem; no ferrule.
