Medieval ceramic floor tile
Lewis Group 53 no. 751
15th century.
Triangular half tile, cut diagonally from a whole square tile. Impressed design of line impressed quaterfoil with double circle with pointed trefoil in each corner. ?Green glaze on upper surface and just over the edges. There are also small patches of bright yellow glaze on the impressed design. It is possible that this is the result of light/white slip patches beneath the glaze. The tile bows slightly, preventing it from lying flat.
Floor tile from Basingwerk Abbey, north-east Wales.
