Dinorwic slate quarry, photograph

unknown

Photograph showing three quarrymen and a dog sat outside a tent. The photograph shows Owen William Humphreys (left), John William Elis (also known as Peris Fab) (centre), and Gwilym Rees Owen (right) during a camping holiday to Rhyl in August 1938. All three were quarrymen at Dinorwig Quarry. The photograph documents the quarrymen’s first paid holidays from the quarry.

Holidays with pay were first introduced at Dinorwig Quarry in August 1938, and the employees were granted a week’s leave with pay.

This photograph belonged to Mr Owen William Humphreys, a steward at Dinorwig Quarry. He started working at the quarry when he was 14 years old, at Ponc Pendiffwys. In 1946 he became a quarry steward at Ponc Isaf Braich. He was then moved to Muriau (or Lower Wellington as that section of the quarry was also known), and then to the section of the quarry known as Lower Garrett. He remained a quarry steward until August 1969 when Dinorwig Quarry closed.
