Roman copper alloy Trumpet brooch

The upper part is decorated with a stylised ox-head. At the waist are three transverse triple mouldings, separated from each other and from the upper and lower parts of the bow by deep grooves. Only carried round the front of the bow. The lower part of the bow tapers slightly towards the foot; it is decorated with a central raised longitudinal band with a raised wavy line to either side. A transverse double moulding separates the leg from the foot which consists of three graduated transverse mouldings. All these mouldings at the lower end of the bow are carried right round. The catchplate terminates above the double moulding which separates the bow from the foot. There is a round boss beneath the foot. Some trace of 'silvering'. The spring is supported by a large lug behind the the trumpet head; the lug rises to a sharp point above the trumpet head to form a stop for the chain-loop and collar. Below the lug, near the base of the head, is a broken hook for the internal chord.

Pin, spring and chain loop largely missing.
