Tricycle

Burry Port & Gwendraeth Valley Railway platelayer's cycle, 1901.

It is necessary to inspect railway tracks regularly for normal maintenance purposes. On other occasions, when there has been a signal failure, for example, it may be necessary for a railwayman or an inspector to examine a considerable length of track before a train can be allowed to proceed. This cycle was used for that purpose along the Burry Port and Gwendraeth Valley Railway in Dyfed. It was built in 1901 to the specifications of the railway's Chief Engineer, Mr. John Eager, who used it until the amalgamation with the Great Western Railway in 1922. The cycle remained at Burry Port and was used occasionally up until 1968 when the dock was handed over to the County Council (Source: Welsh Industrial & Maritime Museum Guidebook, 1984).
