Roman copper alloy stud
Plain bronze stud consisting of a flat disc with a shaft behind. Studs such as this would have been appropriate for use on the leather straps of a military apron. Compare the sculptural representations of military aprons on the tombstones of Annaius Daverzus, from Bingerbruck and of Firmus, from Andernach, in the Bonn Museum. The Usk stud, almost 2cm in diameter, is a suitable size for a narrow strap such as those illustrated in the gravestones. But its exact use cannot be determined with certainty.
