Table centre
Table centre made from a single piece of bronze/brown satin. Embroidered using coloured cotton threads with images of the Pyramids, sphinx and the Union Jack. Inscribed '1916 Souvenir of Egypt'. Belonged to a family from Cardiff.
There is no backing, therefore the back of the embroidery is visible. The sides are selvedges but the top and bottom edges have been cut and turned back once (they are frayed). Embroidered with an image of a Union Jack and Turkish/Egyptian flags. It also features an image of the great sphinx of Giza, pyramids, palm trees and a border of flowers at the bottom. Above the main image are the words '1916 souvenir of Egypt' within a circle and flanked by a pair of wings. All embroidery is made by machine (probably the Cornely machine appearing as a chain stitch on the face and straight stitch on the reverse) using multi-coloured cotton threads. The edge of the cloth is trimmed with two cream cotton twisted cords which have been crossed over along the length and secured by a chain stitch of yellow cotton thread.
