Smith, Sampson (Longton business founded c 1846. Smith died in 1878 but the firm continued in production under various names until 1963. Figure making continued until at least 1926 (see Gordon Pugh pp12-13))
Figure of Ira David Sankey, white earthenware with a slightly crackled glaze, heavily black and blue spotted around the upper part of the body, standing on an oval plinth, inscribed in gilt raised capitals on a plaque set in upper part of plinth. Figure in contemporary dress, standing on green grass, black shoes, white trousers, underglaze black frock coat, white waistcoat with repeated iron red motif on either side of chest, white shirt front with a high collar, bow tie, face naturalistically painted, brown hair, moustache and side burns, gilt detailing but very rubbed. Right hand resting on hip, left hand resting on a red/brown book and grey pillar, green and brown brick wall behind the figure.
